Overcoming Fall Blues: Our Journey to Changed Our Cold Weather Mood

A long time, one individual disliked the arrival of autumn and winter. Diminishing sunlight made her feel constantly tired, sluggish, and downhearted. This cycle continued for an entire decade.

"I would get quite down, extremely lonely, and irritable," explains the twenty-eight-year-old career advisor based in London. "I would hibernate and experience deep sadness."

Upon realizing how closely her emotional state correlated with the changing seasons, she opted to radically change her everyday habits. Rather than staying indoors as daylight faded, she made changes.

Staying Active

These days, she schedules her activities weeks in advance and mostly steers clear of working from home to guarantee regular personal connection.

When working remotely, she goes to co-working spaces for both a change of scenery and possibilities to connect.

"I strive to avoid being at home," she notes. This requires her to "step out in the cold temperatures instead of remaining cozy in bed."

Sleep Patterns and Natural Light

Many people notice changes in emotional state as seasons change.

"It's representative, how seasonal shifts influence our mood," notes a mental health expert.

As daylight decreases, serotonin levels drop while melatonin increases, influencing both emotional state and sleep cycles. This biological change can result in tired and lonely.

Experts emphasize the necessity for balanced nutrition, regular physical activity, and nature connection - especially during the desire to remain inside is strong.

"The invigorating effect of morning fresh air while having a warm beverage is very helpful for emotional balance," adds another therapeutic counselor.

Bright Light Treatment and Wake-up Routines

Light therapy - employing light boxes that simulate sunshine - can provide significant benefits. By adjusting melatonin and enhancing happiness chemicals, it can improve overall feelings, stamina, and sleep patterns.

Keeping regular wake-up and sleep times during every season helps regulate your body's internal clock.

Wake-up light devices can also assist - they slowly brighten prior to alarm, mimicking natural dawn.

"It dramatically changed my wake-up routine," states a twenty-five-year-old living in East Sussex. "Rising early to work out seems easier with this device."

Accepting Hygge

While activity helps numerous individuals combat autumn blues, some individuals find solace in fully embracing the cozier aspects of cooler seasons.

Wellness counselors recommend creating comforting rituals like warm soaks, flickering flames, and wrapping in blankets.

"Making winter magical might completely change your perspective on colder weather," they note.

Social media platforms have spread this idea through videos showing fall colors, flickering candles, and hot drinks.

"Discovering happiness in everyday experiences produces noticeable improvement," states a digital influencer.

Throughout the change between sunny days and Christmas season, "pace reduces during autumn, and we need to find our most effective strategies to keep going," adds the 24-year-old from Lincoln.

Establishing Warmth

For many individuals, transforming their home into a haven of coziness shows vital during more hours at home.

"At times staying inside and welcoming coziness is exactly what you must have," states someone else who has adopted a new mindset about weather shifts.

"No one can exist in perpetual summer," they add.
