Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the last eight to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Gearing Up for the Summer Swing

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a special entry, a fortnight prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is scheduled to participate in Hobart, Australia a following week, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two occasions, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 as well as 2017.

"I am thrilled to return in the country and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."

Statistical Highlights

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 wins and 21 losses. The upcoming edition will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

Officials indicated that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to take part in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was 44 when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
